Greetings

I am a student of Adventist history (currently completing a PhD on William Miller at the University of Queensland) with a particular interest in 19th century American Religious History (Mormonism, Millerism, Adventism etc.). I am also interested in Early and Medieval Church History (I have published an article on the 12th century mystic Hildegard of Bingen). I have the privilege of lecturing on SDA history, Ellen G. White, and Church history generally; in the Faculty of Theology at an Helderberg College in South Africa. All opinions on this blog are personal and should not be taken as representing the views of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, nor of Helderberg College.

  1. Where, in the world, are you? Student…teacher…but where? I’d really like to talk to you about some things related to my doctoral work.

  2. Greetings Hobbes,

If you’d like to be included in the forthcoming issue of Spectrum about Adventist bloggers, shoot me an email.

    Pax,

  3. I have been scratching around and have come across references to the Israel Dammon trial, and his connection to Ellen Harmon and James White. We did not cover this in the class I did in EG White some years ago, and am wondering what to make of it?

    Any thoughts?

  4. Thanks for your comment Wayne, I’ve taken up the topic in a post.

  5. Bless you mate. Thank you for reading mine. Your comment came as I was feeling abandoned and stranded in the world wide web.

    All the best.

  6. I’m glad that my simple click could brighten your day Peyotitlan. Good luck with your blog!

  7. Would you be interested in exchanging links to each other on our blogs?

  8. Of course! I actually thought I had already linked to your blog. Situation rectified.

  9. I sent you an email a couple of days ago. Don’t know if you got it. Please let me know if you’re open to my proposal.

  10. I find you Blog sight interesting. I was a SDA for 30 years and then out for 20. I came back after leaving the Church of God 7th Day. I ran into one of their belief that made me reconcider my membership with them. I was studying the SDA research web sight and ran into an old doctrine from the EGW era. It is “The Return to Jerusalem” and the 1k reign here on earth. It plays right into the recent “Christian” productions of all the “Left Behind” concept. Try to imagine how this might be misconstrued as fulfilment of prophecy. “One left behind and one taken”.

  11. History of Wm Miller. Find the book, ‘Movement of Destiny”, by Leroy Froom. This will help

  12. Thanks for dropping by Larry & Keith. Hope you continue to find something of value on the site.

  13. Hello,
I am an elder at Capital Spanish SDA Church. My reason for writing to you is that; we have created a blogspot for the Adult Sabbath School Lesson and wish to be added to your blogroll, and at the same time we would add your blog to ours. With this blog we are able to bring the lesson to people in a more visual and interactive way. That way people are more likely to read and be filled with the fruits that the lesson brings by interacting through comments.
Please let us know if this is to your interest and if we are added to your Blogs for thinkning Adventists.
The link to our blog is http://www.capitalthinks.blogspot.com/

Thanks and may the Lord Bless your works

  14. Wow,

I have not seen many new Ellen White “scholars” out there. I am pleased that you have as a historian taken an interest in contextualizing Ellen without throwing her out.

I am not an Ellen G. Whitist whatever that means, but I felt that for too long she was criticized unfairly as if every word she wrote was immutable and transcended time.

    Thanks you bring great perspective.
